Ostenil® Injections
What Are Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus Injections?
Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus are hyaluronic acid (HA) injections used to help manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found within synovial fluid, the fluid that lubricates and cushions our joints.
In healthy joints, hyaluronic acid helps provide lubrication, shock absorption, and smooth movement. In osteoarthritis, both the quantity and quality of hyaluronic acid within the joint can reduce, contributing to pain, stiffness, and reduced function.
Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus work by supplementing the natural hyaluronic acid within the joint. This process, sometimes referred to as viscosupplementation, aims to improve joint lubrication, reduce friction, and enhance the joint’s ability to absorb load during movement.
Ostenil® Plus contains a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than standard Ostenil® and includes mannitol, an antioxidant that helps protect the hyaluronic acid from breakdown, potentially prolonging its effect. Ostenil® Plus is commonly administered as a single injection, whereas standard Ostenil® may require a series of injections.
What Are the Benefits of Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus?
For appropriately selected patients, hyaluronic acid injections may provide:
- Reduction in joint pain
- Reduced stiffness
- Improved mobility and function
- Improved ability to participate in exercise and rehabilitation
- A non-surgical treatment option for osteoarthritis
- Reduced reliance on pain medication in some patients
- Symptom relief that may last several months
Unlike corticosteroid injections, which primarily work by reducing inflammation, hyaluronic acid injections aim to improve the mechanical properties of the joint fluid and support smoother joint movement.
Benefits are not usually immediate. Most patients notice gradual improvement over several weeks following treatment, with symptom relief often lasting for several months, although individual responses vary.
Conditions Commonly Treated
Hyaluronic acid injections are primarily used for osteoarthritis and degenerative joint conditions, including:
Knee
- Mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis
- Persistent knee pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis
Shoulder
- Glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis
Other Joints
- Base of Thumb osteoarthritis
- Ankle osteoarthritis
- Other selected arthritic synovial joints
Treatment suitability depends on the severity of arthritis, clinical presentation, previous treatments, and individual patient goals.
What Does the Evidence Show?
Research suggests that hyaluronic acid injections may provide meaningful pain relief and functional improvement for some patients with osteoarthritis, particularly those with mild to moderate disease. Some studies suggest benefits may become more noticeable several weeks after injection and can persist for several months.
However, results across clinical studies have been mixed, and not every patient experiences significant improvement. Current evidence suggests that some individuals respond very well, while others experience little or no benefit. For this reason, careful patient selection and realistic expectations are important.

Risks and Potential Side Effects
Hyaluronic acid injections are generally well tolerated and have an excellent safety profile.
Common and Temporary Side Effects
- Mild discomfort during the injection
- Temporary pain at the injection site
- Mild swelling around the joint
- Temporary increase in symptoms for 24–48 hours
Less Common Risks
- Bleeding or bruising
- Local inflammatory reaction
- Allergic reaction
- Infection (rare but potentially serious)
Because Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus are produced through a fermentation process and do not contain animal proteins, allergic reactions are uncommon.
Limitations of Ostenil® and Ostenil® Plus
Although hyaluronic acid injections can be beneficial for some patients, they do have limitations:
- They do not reverse or cure osteoarthritis
- Benefits vary considerably between individuals
- Symptom improvement may take several weeks
- Not all patients respond to treatment
- They are generally more effective for symptom management than for altering the progression of arthritis
- They should not be viewed as an alternative to exercise, rehabilitation, and long-term self-management strategies
For many patients, the greatest benefits are achieved when injection therapy is combined with a comprehensive rehabilitation programme and ongoing self-management.
When Might Ostenil® or Ostenil® Plus Not Be Suitable?
Hyaluronic acid injections may not be recommended if you:
- Have an active infection
- Have a suspected joint infection
- Have a significant skin infection at the injection site
- Have a known allergy to any component of the injection
- Have severe joint damage where alternative treatment options may be more appropriate
- Are experiencing a large joint effusion that requires separate management
